In the past I have put an effort into reviewing someones profile and making reference to something in it so they know I have at least read it, but often the email is ignored so after a while you get to a point you feel whats the point and just write something simple like "Hi, hows it going?"
It might mean they'll take a look and your profile and if they like it then we can both engage in fuller messages.

I notice a couple of people making an effort to try and encourage a bit of social atmosphere here. Apart from the few who seem to be making the effort...there is very little interaction going on....so it kind of looks like the whole show is dependent on them! I wish more people like that would make an effort.....I half think they are employed by the site, and if they are not, they really should be...but if there was an incentive by the site people it might help to encourage people to be more proactive to encourage people to get together.....etc etc.....

It's really obvious when someone hasn't put any thought into a mail they send to you. Personally, although out of good manners I'll always reply, but I certainly won't put much effort into my response in such cases.

When someone actually takes the time to review your profile and maybe pick up on some areas of mutual interest (or even areas where they are totally opposed), then at least it shows they really want to communicate with you.

It's too easy to send the silly old blah, blah, blah messages to 50 people you spot on-line with 'Hi, how are you' or some other such mundane comment!
